How to deal with Concrete Floors when laying Wooden Flooring
You should always employ professional wood floor fitters as it is a specialist are. If you click here and look at the bottom of the page you can see how a fireplace surround was destroyed by a builder who fitted a floor and did not follow the correct procedures.
For the Solid Wood Flooring to guarantee any installation and its wood flooring you must apply the following products, a damp proof membrane (DPM) and then the adhesive. It is always best to glue a floor to concrete for a lifetime of trouble free installation. We can of course only guarantee our own recommended fitters work but if you have a builder or your own fitter adhering to the system below you should have no problems once the floor is fitted.
Unlevel Concrete Floors
If the floor is not level or flat then you must either screed the floor over or use a self levelling compound. For the full specification and coverage please see the adhesive and sealant section on the web site. You must test the moisture level of the floor screed and the humidity of the room. Maximum moisture content of the screed is 8% the same as the wood and maximum humidity 55% to 60%.
The following procedures will guarantee that you will never get a problem once the floor is laid on concrete floors.
If your floor is not level You will need a self levelling compound if the floor has more than a 10mm difference in levels we recommend the Ardex 301K Water based mix for the following reason:
Applying a DPM
You should then apply a DPM using our recommended environmentally friendly Bona R580 6kg tub two component product which we supply at trade which covers 10 m2. If you have a bitumen surface or bitumen residue or a very porous screed you should use the Bona R410 product for the following reasons:
This means you will be able to bring your concrete floor up to standard, dry and level in one day for fitting your wooden floor.
Applying Flooring Adhesives You can apply the adhesive 4 hours after using the R580 if you use the two component product. We recommend the Bona R850 adhesive as it has been designed with underfloor heating in mind and the Bona adhesive comes with a comb. For hollow spots you can use the R880 tube which will save you having to use too much adhesive. You should use the recommended comb and not a flat trowel. You should be able to walk on the floor after 8 hours. |
