Micro Bevel and Square Edged Wood Flooring
Micro Bevelled Floor boards: With a prefinished wooden floor that is lacquered or oiled on a production line there will always be a micro bevel. This ensures that the oil or lacquer fully protects the board on its edges as well as preventing splintering of the edge during manufacturing.
The end view pictures pictures below show a micro bevel on a lacquered board and one on a board that has been hand distressed (furthest to the right) to look like a reclaimed board, on the left is a picture of the surface.
Square Edged Floor Boards: These are always unfinished wooden floors as there will always be a tendency for the top edge of the board to splinter. If this happens it can easily be repaired before finally finishing the floor. With unfinished boards you have an infinite range of colours that you can use to suit your personal taste and decor due to the latest innovations from major wood oil manufacturers like Woodcare Denmark and Blanchon Hard Wax Oils. The pictures below show the square edge both from the top and side.
