Moisture Meters
These are very important instruments and any sub floor should be tested before fitting hardwood floors. As can be seen here the maximum moisture content of a sub floor must be less than 8% as our wood flooring is kiln dried to 8%. This shows a moisture content of 24% on old floor boards which means that there is a serious damp problem below and no floor should be fitted until this has been investigated to find the cause. If there is a damp problem then you should do the following:
  • investigate why there is moisture in the floor
  • Depending on the outcome of this investigation you should either seal the floor or do whatever the flooring fitter recommends
  • In most cases to be absolutely certain that you will never get a problem with you wood floor you should always put a damp proof membrane down prior to installing the floor. Please see details on this in the sealants for sub floors section.
The comb shown on the left is 1000 gram notched steel which is supplied with the R850 Adhesive, This is used to spread a thin layer on the sub floor, If you have low spots then use the R880 as an adhesive filler.

R850 is an elastic 1-component silane based adhesive for parquet floors according to EN 14293 (soft). The hardened adhesive is - similar to conventional adhesives - able to withhold thrust during expansion, while the resistance against shrinkage is very low. Tensions to the sub floor are therefore reduced. The use of a primer is in general not necessary. The adhesive hardens by a chemical reaction with moisture. Drying time is approx. 20 min. However if you have an old bitumen floor then you will need to seal it with R410.  This adhesive is compatible with both the R410 and R580 DPM sealants.

Bona R880 is an elastic silane based construction adhesive. It does not contain plasticizers.  With its extreme high “green” strength and extreme rapid bonding it is specially designed for repair work on silane bonded wooden floors or for the installation of skirting boards.  The bonding process can be accelerated, by spraying little amounts of water on the substrate or spreading the adhesive. The use of a primer is in general not necessary.

R860 is an elastic 1-component silane based adhesive for parquet floors. The hardened adhesive is similar to conventional adhesives - able to withhold thrust during expansion, while the resistance against shrinkage is low. Tensions to the sub floor are therefore reduced. The use of a primer is in general not necessary. The adhesive hardens by a chemical reaction with moisture, open time is approx. 40 min. Because of its high strength it is specially suited for massive parquet installations.
