Colour of flooring can make a "huge difference"

The choice you make when it comes to deciding on a colour for your flooring could have long-term effects on the atmosphere, feeling and comfort of the place in which it is being laid.

That is the view of feng shui expert Sarah McAllister, who said the precise shade you opt for is a vital decision in the process of investing in a new surface for a commercial venue – such as a pub, restaurant, bar or club.

Ms McAllister, who is the director of FengShuiAgency.com, explained there are various spiritual benefits associated with getting your selection of a floor right. Feng shui is all about finding a balance, such as between closed and open spaces.

"The colour on the walls and on the flooring can make a huge difference to the energy of a space and can turn a sick and stuck building into a dynamic and alive building - I have many, many testimonials to that effect ... Trying to make your choice based on colour therapy principles alone can lead to big feng shui mistakes," she stated.

So what colour should you opt for? Well, Ms McAllister is quick to point out that the entrance to any professional environment should always be light and airy. With this in mind, bamboo flooring can provide a light and sophisticated tone that is sure to look great in almost any establishment.

Angela Self, one of the founders of money site Smart Cookies, told the Globe and Mail recently that she believes businesses and individuals should splash out on the best wood they can afford when it comes to replacing a floor.

The key may then be, if Ms McAllister is to be believed, to put it together with an interior decor that complements it to create a warm, stylish and inviting place to be.
