Expert: Choose hardwood floor for extreme practicality

Planning a building's future with wood flooring can be an exciting time

There are a number of reasons to choose wood as a flooring material. Whether you want a strong and durable surface that will stand up to heavy footfall, a splendid, high-class finish or simply a beautiful aesthetic impact, the substance is likely to be one you think about long and hard.

When it comes to picking the precise type, the words of designer Katie Crolla, who works for interiors agency NoChintz, could come in very handy indeed. She has given her view on a variety of woods, identifying a hardwood floor as the ultimate choice in terms of practicality.

"Hard floors are very practical for cleaning, but sometimes need to be softened with a rug in areas such as the bedroom or living room," Ms Crolla explained.

However, that is far from your only consideration. Should you live in a dwelling that has particularly low ceilings, perhaps giving the impression that your rooms are smaller than they really are, wood can help.

"Rooms that have low ceilings generally benefit from lighter colours on the floor. Using wide, long planks for wooden floors elongate rooms and can make laminate flooring look more realistic," Ms Crolla noted.

It is certainly true that wood is the material of choice for owners of some of the world's most prestigious buildings. From top restaurants and bars to residential properties, it is implemented for its reliability and beauty.

The Washington Times told last week of one such instance – at Fraser Mansion in the US. A hardwood floor was identified as one of many luxurious features of the building.

Should you be seeking the ultimate in top-end interior design, it is worth taking on board another piece of advice from Ms Crolla. She suggested that high-quality underfloor heating can take your wooden floor to the next level.
