Parquet wood flooring is proving to be a popular option among households in Europe, a new report has revealed.
According to the European Federation of the Parquet Industry (FEP), parquet consumption across the continent held up last year, despite ongoing problems in the wider economy.
As a result, the group is confident the material will stay in demand throughout 2012, since it is high quality and used in many creative and innovative ways.
However, FEP acknowledged that the sector is hoping the financial crisis does not continue to drag on for a long time, as an improvement could lead to even more people using parquet on the floors in their home.
Lars Gunnar Andersen, president of the group, commented: "Under the circumstances, the overall performance of our industry is certainly commendable. Parquet is very much alive."
He described the results in some European countries as particularly promising and said he hopes to see this trend repeated across all nations in the continent. Mr Andersen said this would lead to some "much desired uniformity" in the sector.
FEP added that the industry is "very much up to the challenges it has been facing for the past few years and will emerge a winner when it comes to the crunch".
Making improvements to the home is a common aspiration among people in Britain in particular, but many appear to be unwilling to let the economic slump force them to put their plans on hold.
Research by Skipton Building Society recently revealed that some people are picking something they would like to spend money on in order to motivate them into saving a bit of cash each month.
Many said they are putting money aside in order to fund home improvements. This could be a good way to make sure the installation of parquet flooring remains affordable in these tough times.
