Wooden floors 'can work well in kitchens'

Although it is not the choice that might immediately spring to mind in a kitchen or bathroom, plenty of people still have wooden floors in such rooms.

This is the claim made by one interior designer, who reported that a popular choice with those carrying out home improvements at the moment is oak hardwood flooring.

Carolyn Parker, who runs her own self-titled company in Yorkshire, explained: "I think people have got slightly bored with all the dark wooden floors, we have seen a lot of limed oak - which is very light and calming."

She added that this material is one that provides people with the ability to match the base of their rooms to many of the natural fabric colours that are currently in fashion.

Ms Parker explained that this combination of light oak wood flooring and hues inspired by nature provides a "very nice look" in a home.

The appeal of oak flooring was recently highlighted in the Chicago Tribune, with the news source claiming that it provides "rich good looks and durability".

In addition, the article by Gene and Katie Hamilton suggested that although the initial outlay can seem expensive, it provides a "long-term investment you'll enjoy for as long as you live in your home".

The couple pointed to the importance of ensuring that such floors are properly laid and placed on a "clean and sound" subfloor to ensure that they last for a long time.

Even for those who may be unlikely to reap the benefits of an oak wood floor for a lifetime as they will move home, such improvements to properties can add to their appeal for buyers.

This is according to Joe Scarp, owner of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate, who recently explained to abc15.com that those hoping to see may benefit from laying the material as it has broad appeal, as well as being highly durable and child-friendly.
