A quick guide to sustainable hardwood flooring

Posted By Solidwood Company

If there’s anything we’ve learnt since our humble beginnings, it’s that at The Solid Wood Flooring Company we’re more dedicated than ever before to continue our commitment to sustaining our planet.

As our forests decrease, our reliance on precious resources increases. Our mission has always been to offer sustainable options for reducing your environmental impact.

That’s why we work tirelessly to create products that offer stunning interiors without compromising our planet’s future.

By buying from The Solid Wood Flooring Company, you’re not only getting the perfect fit for your project, but you’re also getting the benefit of knowing you’ve committed to sustainability.

Here are a handful of the things we do as part of our commitment to offering sustainable flooring.

1. Our collaboration with Gone West

The UK’s forests currently has the lowest percentage of land in Europe, with only 11.76% of our land being used as forests. It’s crucial to our country’s environmental future that we act now.

That’s why we’re proud to be a part of the Gone West global mission. Our plan is to use approximately 1,000 oak trees a year, and as part of our partnership we’ve committed to planting 4,000 oak trees every year. So for every tree we cut down, we’ll plant three new ones.

Why is this important to us? Well, trees help clean the air we breathe and filter the water we drink. For us, it’s about giving back to nature, working with our community, and taking care of our future generations.

2. We work closely with the FSC®️ and PEFC™️

Since we started, we’ve always strived to be responsible when sourcing materials. For one, it means we can provide you with green and healthy wood flooring products.

To ensure our materials come from certified, sustainable, and well-managed forests, we work closely with the Forest Stewardship Commission (FSC®️) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC™️). Through this, we’ll never source materials from the rainforest, nor purchase from questionable sources – there’s simply no need.

3. We only harvest older trees

Whenever we use a tree, we ensure nothing goes to waste. That’s why we only harvest older trees that consume less carbon and produce less oxygen. We work with forestry experts to select the trees and ensure no habitats are damaged or destroyed.

To utilise every inch of a tree, we primarily produce engineered floorboards. This means we consume around one fifth of the amount of material compared to producing solid boards. In turn, we can provide your project with additional benefits such as underfloor heating systems and flexible sizing without compromising sustainability.
