Engineered Wood Flooring is made in many different ways. Engineered floors mean that the Oak, Walnut or Maple top layer has been glued to a backing board for stability and sustainability. There are many reasons for making engineered wood floors and some of the main ones are listed below:
We can get more than 4 times more flooring from the same tree.
Engineered floors are more stable because the solid oak is either 4mm or 6mm thick. The backing layers are very stable with the grain perpendicular to the top surface grain.
Saving Precious Resource:
The top of the tongue on an engineered board is nearly the same distance from the top surface as a solid wood floor. This can be seen in the image below:
Modern adhesives means that there is no formaldehyde emissions when gluing and making plywood, and we use Dynea adhesives to glue the top layer to the plywood.
Different backing layers:
There are plywood backs called multilayer engineered wood floors or 3 layers where there is a thick middle layer and a thin back layer to make up the engineered board.

3 Layer Engineered Wood Floors:
The image below shows a 3mm solid Oak top and a 9mm Poplar middle with a 2mm thick Poplar back. Poplar is a fast growing hardwood so we are saving our precious Oak trees. This can be sanded many times and is perfect for underfloor heating. It is not a structural board unlike the 20mm thick multilayer engineered floors.
