Britain is one of the least-wooded countries in Europe with just 12% coverage – compare that to France, which has 30% woodland cover, it shows the UK has a long way to go.
Over the past 10 years, over 100 ancient woodlands have been removed in the UK due to agriculture and development – even now, large trees in urban settings are under threat.
The Solid Wood Flooring Company is passionate about the protection of our woodlands, and only ever uses FSC or PEFC certified timber in all of our products, to help fight against illegal felling of trees that present an unsustainable issue for the whole world.
Last year, The Solid Wood Flooring Company was highly commended by the WWF for our efforts in sourcing sustainable timber for our flooring products and were awarded the top marks of three trees. All employees here at the company are also keen supporters of the WWF’s Save the Forest campaign.
How can we help further?
We need to improve the rate in which we as a country plant new trees – the Woodland Trust say we need to double the planting rate of new trees over the next 50 years.
Also, the type of tree makes a difference! The UK needs less mineral-taking, fast-growing conifers and more planting of broadleaf species like Oak, Beech and Ash.
We are delighted by news of the Charter for UK Trees led by the Woodland Trust and a group of specialists. The last time we had a Charter on trees was way back in 1217, so this is much needed!
We need to start planting trees now – and you can join in too. The next national, free planting event is planned for the 19th March at the National Forest in Ratby, Leicestershire.
