We developed two engineered wood floors for the above project and advised on the subfloor build up and installation to ensure a trouble free fit out. This project will follow on from Newfoundland Tower at Wood Wharf and we are currently supplying the engineered flooring for the marketing suites at level 31 Canada Square for the A1 buidling at Wood Wharf.

The products they have chosen were initially designed by Goddard Littlefair and we worked with the designers to create two unique pallets for the 1 bed and two bed apartments. This is a new product and we do not have fitted pictures yet, but the images show one carton laid out. The two wood floor product codes are TW E731 and TW E753. These boards were similar to some of our antique and herringbone colours but the designers wanted a slightly different hue to the colour. You can see with one of the images how we control batches and colours. The TW E731 was based on our antique board but they wanted it light brushed with a matt UV oil finish rather than a lacquer.

This case study shows how flexible we are and that we can accommodate any requirement where clients are looking for unique floors

We will update this case study as work progresses.

You can see our American Black Walnut floor here which is on level 31 in the main reception areas leading to the marketing suites.

Carbonising Oak is where it is heat treated to burn off all the tannins and create a dark colour just like carbon. However because each tree is different and each part of an Oak tree is different the colours and hues will be different.

The two pictures below show the extreme colour variation that can occur in a normal natural oiled carbonised board like our E802

It also depends on the seasons for example some hot season will make the tree grow quicker and colder ones it will grow slower which means it takes in less nutrient from the soil. The area where it grow also has an impact for example if there is a lot of iron oxidises in the soil then carbonising will tend to make the boards redder where as other natural elements will have different effects.

Reducing Colour Variation in Carbonised Oak

The two pictures below show how the natural occurring colour variation can be almost eliminated by professional finishing craftsmen just using natural oils.  The floor still has the reddish warm tones of carbonised oak which has the same colour all the way through the top layer of the engineered Oak. This could have been further reduced taking out all the reddish tones with other treatment which are all natural oil based and child safe meeting all the latest British and European standards.

In 2021, we had an enquiry from a client in Germany who was rebuilding their home. They wanted Impervia flooring, and we exported over 160 m2 to Germany.

IMPERVIA FLOORING IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE IT’S FIRST EXPORT TO GERMANY

We take pride in presenting the future of high-quality sustainable flooring. Designed for durability, our luxury planks are built to last. So, when our client from Germany got in touch whilst rebuilding their home, our flooring was the perfect fit for their residential project.

Recently, our client got in touch to give us an update on the project:

Dear martyn,

how have you been?

I kept waiting for the skirting to be installed, it still isn’t, but I took a few pictures. It took several in the bathrooms, because i think it looks amazing in combination with tiles and it’s so much warmer and slip-proof. i hope the pictures are what you had in mind. if not, please let me know and i am happy to take more!

We are so happy with the floor, it feels so good, looks amazing, is very easy to clean and I can just let my kids play without worrying about scratches. Thank you so much again for sending it so far!

You can add that all the guests think it is real wood and that it is amazing in the bathrooms because it is so slip-proof (if that is the correct word).

You can see some images here, and we’ll keep updating this case study as more come in.

DANDI WEMBLEY: A NEW KIND OF LIVING

We’ve been working with architecture and development specialists Dandi Living for 12 years. They wanted a cost effective way of retrofitting a 14-storey office block to accommodate 360 apartments with a hard wearing flooring solution.

We’ve been involved on the York House project from the beginning. Existing floors have been assessed and levelled, and our Impervia White Washed Oak has now been installed.

The project, known officially as Dandi Wembley, is located in the heart of North West London. It’s designed to offer fully furnished studio and one bed apartments surrounded by elevated communal spaces for socialising, relaxing, working and revitalising. Their aim is to deliver a new kind of city co-living.

THE BENEFITS OF RETROFITTING

As part of our commitment to providing the sustainable, safe and healthy choice for waterproof, fireproof, and formaldehyde free flooring, we adopt and promote retrofitting as part of the RetroFirst campaign.

Originally developed as a response to the escalating climate crisis, RetroFirst is a campaign led by Architects’ Journal. The campaign’s objectives are simple: to prioritise retrofitting existing buildings over demolishing and rebuilding them.

On the York House project, the cost saving of using Impervia®, because of the acoustic back layer and residential warranty of 30 years, was more than 35% of previous estimates.

Impervia® is perfect because of its acoustic backing and a rigid core. It will be cleaner than the tiles which will have been professionally cleaned before fitting the Impervia® Flooring.

Because there is no movement in the rigid core it means Impervia® can be installed right up to the skirting without the need for any trims. The look will be perfect as if it was the original floor.

Floors for residential spaces like homes and hotels require a high level of resistance against mould, dents, water and fire. This is where Impervia® holds its own, boasting a range of features such as water & fire resistance and dent & mould proof.

We have worked with Berkeley Homes for many years and Chelsea Creek is part of St George where we also worked at London Docks. In London docks they have installed our TW E958 cobble grey herringbone throughout, including the kitchen, where the floor can be seen in the iimages provided in the marketing suite. Herringbone is very much in vogue at present and we have many version’s and colour options. If we do not have what you want we can easily create it as we have done for many of our clients. Few people realise that it is possible to clad old stairs with our engineered herringbone parquet floors. It is a specialist skill and you should only employ trusted professionals who have the specialist equipment.

The skill in cladding stairs with small blocks rather than planks can be seen in the images below.

The parquet blocks used here are unfinished so that you get perfect square edges. They are then oiled after all other works are completed so that you get your perfect floor.

In the image below you can see the intricate cuts that need to be made where there are corners. The fitters also clad the steps so that there was no break in the floor or ugly joins.

There is no separate stair nose piece as the top layer of solid Oak is a good 4mm thick and this allows the fitters to create an accurate mitre join. You can only do this with unfinished herringbone parquet as it will then have a light sand and finish.

You can create any coloured floor you want from white to black and grey. Blanchon are continually increasing their range of coloured solid oils and they are easy to apply. Our accredited fitters are able to do this for you.

The reason the crown line on the image to the left is off centre is due to the corridor’s and other rooms.

Once set, the adhesive on the crown line is allowed to cure and harden over 24 hours. This means that the rest of the installation will then follow perfectly without any gaps.

The image shows how you can continue your herringbone floor from bedrooms, to stairs to living rooms if you have square edge unfinished herringbone blocks.

You can even use different coloured oils in different rooms to match your decor. For example, white oil in bedrooms and darker oils or greys, downstairs.

With professional fitters and their specialist tools you can create your perfect wood floor.

In this commercial project we needed to address a Health and Safety requirement for the visually inpaired. Health and Safety guidelines dictate that there must be a contrast between the step nosing and the surrounding riser and tread of the steps.

It can be difficult to meet this requirement and maintain an asthetically pleasing design.  So we came up with inserting metal on the nosings and having the treads and risers made from our E151 Double brushed fumed oak flooring.

Wireworks London approached us looking for a modern industrialised Oak to clad onto a winding staircase in a beautiful London home. Amongst the options we presented was our CH-E780. This a White Oak with a brushed and band sawn surface giving it a clean yet worn texture. The rustic grade Oak allows for some knotting to appear without it overpowering carefully detailed floorboards.

These boards are finished with a commercial grade UV cured oil that makes it hard wearing and easy to maintain. This particular product has also been fitted throughout the busy, modern offices at 3 Shortlands, Hammersmith. It is easily one of our most popular surfaces and finishes.

Wireworks didn’t want a separate stair nose component, instead opting for mitring the length of the boards to a 45-degree angle and jointing them together with a biscuit and high quality PVA glue. The effect is a stunning cascade of band sawn Oak which looks like it was purpose built in a specialist workshop or factory. This an excellent example of the ingenuity of the team at Wireworks and the adaptability of wood flooring.

Would you like to see this type of cladding in using a herringbone parquet? Then please see our case study: Cladding Stairs in Engineered Herringbone Parquet

We were approached by a Church who required new flooring in the sanctuary and nave of their building.  There were several factors to consider, firstly durability because of the high amount of traffic the floor would receive.  The ease of cleaning and maintenance. The length of time and cost in fitting parquet.

The best solution was in creating a panel, where we mounted the parquet onto plywood with tongue and groove edges (P823).  This method simplified installation as the parquet could be fitted like normal floor boards.  We finished the oak in danish oil for long lasting protection and easy care.

Still standing as testament to it’s quality, this Classic French Oak Parquet has been fitted in this church for many years and will continue to for decades to come.
