White Marble Stone Luxury Vinyl Marble Tile for Caffé Di Milano
For a busy restaurant that moves from daytime dining into a lively evening and weekend bar environment, the flooring has to do considerably more than look good. At Caffè Di Milano, the brief called for the appearance of classic Italian marble alongside the durability, water resistance and slip performance required for a demanding hospitality setting.
Arcadian Leisure approached The Solid Wood Flooring Company while developing Caffè Di Milano in Birmingham.
The restaurant is open from morning until late, with the space becoming particularly busy during evenings and weekends. That meant the flooring specification needed to account for sustained footfall, regular cleaning, spillages and the everyday wear associated with a busy restaurant and bar.
Aesthetically, the interior called for the distinctive appearance of Italian marble. Natural marble, however, would have introduced additional practical considerations for this particular environment, so an alternative was required that could achieve the design intent while providing more suitable performance characteristics.
Why was Impervia® specified?
Our White Marble Impervia® Tile provided the marble-effect finish required for the interior while offering the performance characteristics needed for hospitality use.
The flooring is 100% waterproof, helping it cope with drinks, cleaning and other everyday spillages without the moisture concerns associated with some flooring materials. Its rigid mineral-based core is reinforced with fibreglass to provide stability and durability, while the commercial-grade surface is designed to withstand demanding use.
For Caffè Di Milano, key specification considerations included:
Slip resistance: 69 PTV in dry conditions and 40 PTV in wet conditions.
- Water resistance: a fully waterproof construction suited to environments where spillages are expected.
- Durability: a rigid, reinforced core designed for demanding commercial applications.
- Maintenance: a surface that can be cleaned routinely without complicated maintenance processes.
- Design: a convincing white marble appearance that complements the restaurant’s Italian-inspired interior.
Flooring designed around the demands of hospitality
Restaurant flooring has to balance aesthetics with practical performance. High footfall, moving furniture, food and drink spillages and frequent cleaning all place considerably different demands on a floor than would typically be expected in a residential setting.
At Caffè Di Milano, Impervia® allowed the designers to retain the light, polished appearance of marble throughout the restaurant while specifying a floor better suited to those operational demands.
The White Marble finish also works naturally with the restaurant’s cream, gold and neutral interior palette, helping create the elegant Italian-inspired aesthetic without making the floor purely a decorative consideration.
How has the flooring performed?
The Impervia® flooring was installed at Caffè Di Milano in 2021 and has since been exposed to several years of continuous restaurant and bar use.
That makes the project a useful example of how the material performs beyond initial specification. The floor has had to contend with sustained footfall, spillages and regular cleaning while remaining an integral part of the restaurant’s interior.
For architects and interior designers specifying flooring for restaurants, bars and other hospitality environments, the project demonstrates how material selection can balance design intent with practical requirements for slip resistance, moisture resistance, durability and ongoing maintenance.
