Extra wide flooring boards

Wide plank wood flooring is any flooring that is generally wider than 125mm (nearly 5 inches). In our opinion normal width flooring should be at least 180mm wide to 190mm wide (7 inches to 7.5 inches).

Extra wide wood flooring should be at least 240mm wide (more than 9 inches wide).

The Solid Wood Flooring Company can manufacture and supply extra wide flooring in the following widths:
  • 240mm (9.44 inches) wide.
  • 260mm (10.2 inches) wide.
  • 300mm (11.8 inches) wide.
  • 340mm (13.38 inches) wide
  • 400mm (15.7 inches) wide.

Why choose extra wide boards

Wide wood floors will cost a lot more due to the limited supply of very large mature Oak trees. You can use fast growing Spruce but this will have a soft grain structure and sap wood. It will also have resins within the grain structure. Find out more on this here.

Wide wood flooring can make a room look larger than narrow boards and will generally come in longer lengths. The wider the floor board the more it will cost. In fact, some very wide boards could be more than £350 per m2.

We would never advise buying solid oak wide boards due to atmospheric conditions. Wide boards will have heart wood which is denser in grain than the outer rings so will tend to warp. Our Engineered wide wood floors are stable and can be used with underfloor heating. You can also mix the width of boards which is what they did more than a hundred years ago.

Narrow wood floor boards can make a room look “busy”. The TW E781 is a 90mm (3.5 inches) and can be seen in the image below. It also comes in random lengths rather than long lengths of 2200mm or longer. You can see a 90mm wide board fitted in an apartment below.

The image above shows a 260mm wide board being installed in the Viking Museum which is in York. The fitter is creating a “river” as a walkway between the exhibits.

Extra wide flooring boards

This is an example of what to expect from extra wide flooring. The image shows a 400mm wide board. You will get variation in grain and some splits in the wood because of its width.

The image of the 400mm wide boards below shows the sort of grain and variation you can get in very extra wide boards. This is because for Oak trees to get to the size necessary for cutting wood floor boards as wide as this they will need to be at least 200 hundred years old.

The availability of extra wide floor boards is limited especially if it is sustainable and FSC or PEFC Certified. Please call or email to find our more if you are interested in using extra wide floor boards for your projects.
