Stop buying canned beef u2013 itu2019s endangering our planet!

20/10/2017

Illegal deforestation has become a major problem in the world, particularly in Brazil, where at least 90 percent of Amazon deforestation is illegal.

In the UK, organisations selling canned corned beef have been discovered to be purchasing cattle reared on illegally deforested land in the Amazon, which consumers have been unknowingly contributing to.

The Amazon is currently the largest exporter of beef in the world, supplying about one quarter of the global market. With easy transportation in rural areas and low-cost to live, it makes cattle ranching a highly profitable option in Brazil.

Cattle ranching is one of the largest causes of deforestation in the Amazon, accounting for 80 percent of the deforestation rates.  It has also been found that cattle rearing generates more global warming greenhouse gas emissions than transportation.

Last year deforestation rates increased by around 29 percent. As the demand for meat constantly rises, deforestation will continue to increase, affecting our environment more over time.

As well the on-going impact of deforestation, the livestock industry is one of the most damaging sectors to the earth’s limited water resources. The amount of land used to rear cattle is over 10 times the amount needed to produce grain the cattle.

By purchasing canned beef products, you are undoubtedly buying into the illegal deforestation trade and are contributing to the demise of our planet.

At The Solid Wood Flooring Company, we pride ourselves on our commitment to help the environment, by using timber from well-managed forests; only the best and oldest wood is selected, allowing younger trees to prosper for future use.

As advocates for sourcing ethical wood, we promote sustainability by providing high quality environmental products for our customers. For more information contact us +44 (0) 1666 504 015. Or alternatively, email us on: info@thesolidwoodflooringcompany.com.
